The "Manhattan" made her maiden voyage New York-Hamburg on the 10th
of August 1932 and in December 1939 her first voyage New York-Genoa.
In June 1940 the trans-atlantic services were stopped because of the war in
Europe and the vessel went cruising instead.
In June 1941 she was renamed "Wakefield" and entered service as an US Navy
transport.
After a fire in the North Atlantic on September 3, 1942, while sailing in a
convoy the crew abandoned the ship. However it was possible to tow the vessel to Halifax. On September 18, 1942 the US Navy bought the ship and had her repaired and fitted out as a troop transport. The "Wakefield" entered service in April 1944, laid up in May 1946 as a reserve ship. In March 1965 she arrived at Kearny, New Jersey, to be broken up.
