transport.
After a fire in the North Atlantic on September 3, 1942, while sailing in a
convoy the crew abandoned the ship. However it was possible to tow the vessel to Halifax. On September 18, 1942 the US Navy bought the ship and had her repaired and fitted out as a troop transport. The "Wakefield" entered service in April 1944, laid up in May 1946 as a reserve ship. In March 1965 she arrived at Kearny, New Jersey, to be broken up.
